Cylindrical lampshade

This simple cylindrical lampshade is made with a piece of Ikat silk. Ikat is a dying technique which patterns textiles by resist dying the yarn before it is woven into fabric. Single yarns or a bundle of yarn are bound tightly in a pattern sequence and then dyed. The process can be repeated again with different colours. The yarn is then untied and woven into fabric. Ikat textiles have a characteristic blurred edge to their patterns which is a result of the almost impossible task of the weaver lining up partly dyed yarns to create a complicated pattern.

This piece of red and white patterned fabric was brought back from a holiday and we were asked to make it into a lampshade. The fabric is exactly suited for a lampshade as it allows through light and is easy to work with. The size of lampshade was selected to compliment the lampstand and the Ikat pattern,- in this case, 25cm diameter and 22cm in height.
